In this interview, Marc Cage opens up about his musical beginnings, creative process, and his hopes for the future.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your musical journey began?
As far as I can remember, I always loved to just jot stuff down in a journal, especially when life was stressful. I was playing music such as the piano (still on occasion), but writing — especially lyric writing — seems to be something I have delved into a lot.
How would you describe your own musical style?
Well, it’s pop music for the most part. I have dived into rock music, folk music, dream pop, etc.
What do your songs usually talk about, and where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?
Anything really. The majority of the lyrics come from real-life experiences. A lot of the songs, such as “Breaking Free”, especially when looking at the lyrics, come from events that have happened at the place where I work and from family life — dealing with individuals who aren’t always the most pleasant to be around.
Can you tell us a little about your latest song or album?
Breaking Free is about getting away from a toxic relationship. I’m pretty sure anybody listening to the song would be able to relate to it.
Which moment in your career are you most proud of so far?
For me, it has been releasing songs with Rocky Mountain (Alan Burke) on Spotify and other outlets! Finding someone to collaborate with and eventually release music with was the most important thing to me.
How have you evolved as an artist since you started?
There was a long time when I had difficulty taking criticism for my lyrics, yet I never understood that the purpose of the criticism was just to make me better. When I collaborated with Rocky Mountain, he gave me some advice on the lyrics — for example, making the words rhyme. The majority of my older work that I showed him had lyrics that were word for word. He also advised me to think about the possible length of the song and to come up with an interesting chorus. All of this was simply to help me improve my craft — that’s all!
What are your plans for the future — upcoming projects, collaborations, or tours?
I’m hoping that the songs (including Breaking Free) that I released with Rocky Mountain will eventually attract interest from other upcoming recording artists. Hopefully, they’ll love the songs and want to use them for their own projects. That would be such a major highlight of my career!
Thanks for your time,
