For Maryland-based lyricist Marc Cage & Rocky Mountain, music isn’t just a passion—it’s therapy, a mirror, and a way to make sense of the world. Originally from Livingston, New Jersey, and now residing in Bowie, Maryland, this emerging artist has been crafting songs that explore the emotional complexities of everyday life, drawing inspiration from both personal experience and the world around them.
“I lived in Livingston until 2016 and then relocated to Maryland,” they share. “The move gave me a new environment, new challenges—and a lot of new material to write about.”
The Creative Spark
When asked about their creative process, the songwriter laughs lightly. “It always starts with an idea that just pops into my head,” they explain. “It could come from anything—something that happened in my life, a movie, a TV show, even a video game. I usually jot it down in my iPhone notes and brainstorm from there. That’s when the lyric process starts to take shape.”
Much of their inspiration comes from lived experience. “A lot of my songs, like ‘Breaking Free,’ are drawn from real life—particularly my job and family life,” they admit. “It’s about dealing with people who aren’t always the easiest to be around and finding a way to express that frustration and growth through lyrics.”
Influences and Sound
Citing Radiohead, Kate Bush, and Björk as key artistic influences, it’s no surprise that their work leans toward emotional depth and atmospheric introspection. “Those artists are fearless when it comes to experimentation and honesty,” they say. “That’s something I try to channel in my own writing—staying true to my creative vision no matter what.”
Late nights are when creativity strikes hardest. “My favorite time to write is incredibly late on the weekends,” they reveal. “It’s quiet—no distractions, no noise. Just me and my thoughts.”
Art as Therapy
For this songwriter, art isn’t just a means of expression—it’s a form of healing. “Art allows us to express emotions that are hard to put into words,” they explain. “Whether it’s painting, music, or anything else, it’s therapeutic. Writing lyrics has helped me build confidence and self-esteem over the years.”
That sense of growth is deeply tied to collaboration. “Working with Alan Burke—who goes by Rocky Mountain—has been instrumental in my development. He created the melody for ‘Breaking Free’ and has taught me so much about fine-tuning lyrics and structure. It’s a true partnership.”
Defining Success
When asked what success means to them, the answer is refreshingly grounded. “Success is staying true to your vision and creating something that resonates with people,” they say. “If your art inspires others, that’s everything.”
Looking Ahead
The duo’s current goal is to release more music on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music while pitching songs to recording artists. “We’re keeping our eyes open for opportunities,” they explain. “The dream is to make it in this industry despite all its challenges.”
And in five years? The answer comes with a smile. “Hopefully, I’ll be out of my current job and doing this full-time. You’ll see me as a popular lyricist—I’m claiming it!”
